Melanotan-2 Peptide (MT-II / Cyclic alpha-MSH): Research Map (Not a Tan Protocol)
Key takeaways
- Verdict: MT-2 (MT-2) is the cyclic multi-dock “loudspeaker” cousin of alpha-MSH. It covers pigment plus nausea, yawning. Sexual side-channels in older human files. It is not a free-site tan plan. It is not MT-1.
- How it works in one line: A short lactam ring hits more than MC1R. So the broadcast is louder and messier than MT-1’s paintbrush.
- Your next step: Learn the three doors: research vial vs clinic/PT-141 history vs basics. Keep the sunscreen rule honest. Only treat partner SKUs as research options with codes that fire.
Verdict up front: Melanotan-2 is worth knowing if you care why “Barbie drug” captions keep selling a multi-dock peptide as a simple tan shot. It is not worth treating a research vial like a lifestyle melanocortin drug. It is not MT-1 with the quieter MC1R pigment story.
Real human drug science in small pilot and crossover studies. Loud side-channel honesty. No free ranking page that says “skip sunscreen and buy a crimp cap.”.
Keep reading if you typed melanotan-2, MT-II, MT2, “Barbie drug,” melanocortin tan peptide, or “is this the one that also affects erections” and want the map without forum noise. Skip if you want a tanning plan. Skip if you want a MT-1 stack. Skip if you want a reason to ditch SPF. Skip if you want a sexual-enhancement recipe. Skip if you want a claim that a research vial treats ED, desire problems, melanoma risk, or “pale gym skin.” Those asks belong in Pro or a real clinic — not a free ranking page.
Day-one basics still live on Start Here and what are peptides. Adjacent maps when you are done here: MT-1, PT-141, GHK-Cu, GLOW, Kisspeptin, Hexarelin. How to reconstitute peptides.
Teaching only. Not medical advice. A research-shelf MT-2 vial is not an FDA-approved tanning drug. It is not a treatment for ED or low desire. It is not a melanoma-prevention drug. It is not permission to skip shade or sunscreen.

What is Melanotan-2?
Melanotan-2 is a lab-made cyclic cousin of alpha-MSH.
Chemists usually write it as a short lactam-bridged heptapeptide: Ac-Nle-c[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2. That is often shortened to MT-II. The ring locks the shape. So the peptide hits docks hard. It also lasts longer than flimsy natural alpha-MSH bits.
Hadley, Hruby, and colleagues built MT-I and MT-II as pigment research tools. Dorr and colleagues ran an early human pilot with under-the-skin MT-II. Wessells and colleagues later mapped erection effects in men. That work helps explain why a later related compound PT-141, moved into a labeled desire lane instead of a tan lane.
In plain English: MT-2 is the loud multi-dock cousin. MT-1 is the longer linear MC1R-forward paintbrush. It has an FDA implant cousin for a rare sun sensitivity disease. Same hormone family. Different jobs. Different risk captions.
Why this matters: forums mash MT-1, MT-2, Scenesse. PT-141 into one “tan / sex peptide” caption. Shared family. Not interchangeable carts.
So what for you: If a sales page never splits MT-2 from MT-1, it is selling vibes. Same if it never mentions nausea, yawning, or sexual side-channels.
The stadium loudspeaker (one analogy)
Here is the only picture I want stuck in your head.
Think of MT-1 as a paintbrush on the MC1R eumelanin dial. Think of MT-2 as a stadium loudspeaker. The short cyclic ring was built to hit docks hard. So pigment can rise. Other channels can light up too.
Those other channels show up in the older human files. Nausea. Stretching and yawning. Appetite changes. Spontaneous erections. That is not gym lore. That is what the pilot and crossover papers recorded.
A loudspeaker is powerful. It is also hard to aim. That is why “stronger Melanotan” is a bad shopping filter. Stronger at what dock? Stronger at what side effect?
How sure should you be? Fairly sure MT-2 is a strong cyclic melanocortin agonist with human pigment and erection-related signals in small studies. Much less sure that a research-shelf vial recreates a clinic-grade schedule. Zero sure that darker skin from any source equals cancer insurance.
Why this matters: if you cannot explain “multi-dock loudspeaker, not just a tan paintbrush” in one sentence, you are not ready to open a cart.
So what for you: ask for the receptor story and the side-channel story before you ask for a price.
The stop-you number (and what it is not)
The cleanest human number for MT-2 is not a beach selfie. It is the Wessells 1998 study. Double-blind. Placebo-controlled. Ten men with stress-related ED.
In that study, clear erections developed in 8 of 10 men after MT-II. Mean tip rigidity greater than 80% lasted about 38.0 minutes with MT-II. Placebo was about 3.0 minutes (p = 0.0045). Short-lived nausea, stretching and yawning. Lower appetite showed up more often on drug than placebo.
Wessells 2000 later tested men with body-based ED risks. Reported erections followed 12 of 19 MT-II injections. Placebo was 1 of 21 doses. Mean tip rigidity greater than 80% was about 45.3 minutes versus 1.9 minutes. Sexual desire scores rose versus placebo. Severe nausea and a rare prolonged erection also showed up in that file.
Small crossover studies. Real RigiScan endpoints. A side-effect story that refuses to stay on the pigment channel. A research vial on a partner shelf is not a sexual-medicine Rx. It is not a tan plan.
Dorr 1996 is the early phase-I pilot receipt for under-the-skin MT-II dosing, pigment signals. The same nausea / yawning / erection complex at rising doses. Useful for how-it-works honesty. Still not a free-site lifestyle recipe.
Why this matters: The stop-you number is about 38.0 vs 3.0 minutes of tip rigidity greater than 80% in Wessells 1998. The how-sure level for “my MT-2 research vial is just a safer tan” is still zero.
So what for you: be impressed by the multi-dock biology. Do not confuse a loudspeaker study with a beach protocol.

Research catalog vs clinic history vs foundations
Three doors. Same molecule family online. Different jobs.

Door 1 — Research catalog. Partner shelves can list MT-2 / MT-II as a research sequence. That is a SKU and a certificate story. It is not FDA-approved lifestyle tanning. It is not an ED drug. It is not permission to ignore skin-doctor.
Door 2 — Clinic / labeled melanocortin history. MT-2’s erection-related files help explain why later melanocortin work moved toward compounds like PT-141 in labeled desire care. MT-1’s chemistry cousin Scenesse (Scenesse) is a regulated implant for EPP. That is a different door and a different molecule story. See the PT-141 and MT-1 maps.
Door 3 — Basics. Broad-spectrum sunscreen. Shade behavior. Clothing. Skin-doctor follow-up if moles change. And a doctor for real sexual-health or sun sensitivity questions. If your “problem” is wanting a tan. Ignoring UV math, a peptide caption will not fix the root cause.
Why this matters: people lose money and risk when they buy Door 1. Pretending it is Door 2.
So what for you: Basics and a doctor first for disease or sexual-health questions. Research interest second. Pro if you want plan depth later.
Melanotan-2 vs Melanotan-1 vs PT-141
Quick orientation, not a stack recipe.
MT-2 (MT-II): short cyclic analog. Multi-receptor loudspeaker. Human files include pigment plus nausea/yawning/sexual side-channels. Research vials are still research vials.
MT-1 (NDP-MSH / Scenesse chemistry): longer linear alpha-MSH analog. MC1R-forward pigment story. FDA implant cousin for EPP. Different molecule. See MT-1.
PT-141: another melanocortin story aimed at desire in labeled clinical context — not a tan peptide. See PT-141.
Skin / copper / glow lanes: GHK-Cu and GLOW are separate research maps people confuse with “skin peptides.” Different receptors. Different jobs.
Why this matters: “tan peptide” is a sales talk bucket. Receptor selectivity and regulatory door are the real filters.
So what for you: pick the map that matches the question you actually have. Do not buy the loudest vial by default.
Risk honesty that forums soft-pedal
Unregulated melanotan use has a growing case-report file. That includes mole changes, new nevi, painful-erection emergencies, kidney infarct signals. At least one published systemic toxicity / muscle-breakdown case after a large MT-II injection bought online.
Habbema and colleagues reviewed unregulated alpha-MSH analogue use. They flagged prep, use. Dosing unknowns, plus mole/pigment change reports. Nelson and colleagues described systemic toxicity after a 6 mg MT-II injection. That was six times what that patient thought was a starting dose.
That is not “scare content.” That is why a free ranking page refuses DIY dosing tables.
Why this matters: the expensive mistake is treating Discord screenshots like a safety package insert.
So what for you: If moles change, erections become painful or prolonged, or you feel toxic after any research peptide, that is emergency / doctor territory. Not a coupon code.
Who this page is (and is not) for
This page is for curious readers who want the MT-2 cascade explained cleanly and want partner SKUs labeled as research options.
This page is not for anyone trying to treat ED, low desire, melanoma risk, vitiligo, EPP, or “pale winter skin” with a crimp-cap vial from a research catalog.
Melanocortin and sexual-health topics are high YMYL. Education is fine. Disease hustle is how domains die.
Related foundation reads on this site: sauna, cold plunge, sleep, protein intake, Zone 2, HRV. VO2 max as recovery context — never as “peptides that treat sun damage.”.
Why this matters: the expensive mistake is buying a story you cannot falsify.
So what for you: keep a doctor in the loop for sexual-health workups, changing moles, or true sun sensitivity disease. Do not argue with captions.
Where I look for a Melanotan-2 research compound
Partner reality on today’s check: Peptira lists MT-2 InStock on a public product page via the Drive-tracked URL. BioLongevity tracks Melanotan 1 (url_id=107) as a separate molecule — useful adjacency, not a MT-2 hero swap. Paramount and Limitless did not show a clean public MT-2 Drive product row on this pass. They stay home/shop chips only.

Evidence limits
Strongest clean human biology punch for a ranking reader is Wessells 1998 / 2000 on erection-related endpoints. Add Dorr 1996 for the early MT-II pilot. Hadley reviews cover the MT-I / II discovery lane.
Partner catalogs are not selling a Rx sexual-medicine product. MT-2 on a research shelf is not an ED drug. It is not a desire drug. It is not a DIY tan plan.
If you have prolonged or painful erections, changing moles, unexplained skin pain after light, or questions about melanocortin drugs and sexual side effects, talk to a doctor. That is not a research-cart talk.
Why this matters: confidence framing protects your wallet and your risk file.
So what for you: use this page to get smarter. Use a doctor to get safer. Use Pro if you want plan depth without random Discord screenshots.

The bottom line
MT-2 is one of the loudest melanocortin stories in the research-peptide aisle. Cyclic loudspeaker. Multi-receptor biology. Hard human numbers in Wessells 1998. Partner SKUs exist.
It is still not a DIY tan drug and not MT-1. Read the three-door warning. Talk to a doctor about real sexual-health or mole questions. Build sun habits that do not require a crimp cap.
